Hello, welcome to the Staines-upon-Thames BID website

This website aims to answer your questions and keep you up to date with developments of Staines-upon-Thames Business Improvement District (BID) throughout 2016.

A BID is a 100% business-led, business-managed partnership that unites a whole area and enables coordinated investment in the management and marketing of a commercial area like a town or city centre.  A BID empowers local businesses and enables them to choose and champion new improvements and initiatives for their trading environment, like a town centre, to increase footfall and boost trade.

The business led and business funded organisation will raise an investment pot for Staines town centre of £1.6 million over five years, raised from a levy of 1.5% of the rateable value of eligible business premises.

Businesses in a managed environment such as Two Rivers and The Elmsleigh Shopping Centres will receie a 50% discount as they already benefit from many services and would contribute 0.75% of their premises rateable value.

The money raised through the BID will be spent on a targeted programme of new projects chosen entirely by local businesses that will positively help ensure that Staines-upon-Thames remains competitive and will make a real difference over the next five years (1st April 2017 - 31st March 2022).

A BID can only be set up after a democratic ballot of businesses within the proposed BID area. Businesses vote on a proposal - a five year business plan for Staines town centre - that sets out the programme of services and improvements the BID will deliver.  The BID programme will directly respond to the issues identified and ideas for improvements within the BID area following consultation with businesses.

If the majority of businesses vote ‘yes’ to a BID at ballot, Staines-upon-Thames will become a Business Improvement District (BID) and all improvements will get underway.

A new limited by guarantee, not for profit company will be formed – managed by a voluntary board of local business people from across all business sectors and areas of the town.

BID services have to be in addition to the services provided by the public sector (council and the police) and baseline agreements will be drawn up setting out the level of service currently provided so that the BID can clearly demonstrate added value.

By obtaining Business Improvement District status Staines-upon-Thames Town Centre can work together to invest in our community, enhance our trading environment, boost trade, increase footfall and make a real difference.

To date circa 250 Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) have been developed in towns, cities and business parks across the UK with 50 BIDs in London alone.

95% of BIDs are re-elected by businesses after their first five-year term which clearly demonstrates their value to local businesses.
